Our History

The long history of Makeney Hall Hotel is entwined with the local towns Belper and Milford since the early 19th Century. It begins with a local family, the Strutt’s, whose influence on the area is still seen today in local landmarks such as the Strutt’s North Mill Museum, as well as our very own Strutt House Restaurant.

C.1820

Makeney Hall begins as a farmhouse, purchased by the original ‘Mr Makeney’ also known as Anthony Radford Stutt. He completely rebuilt the farmhouse into the grand Makeney Hall (Original features we still see today).

1876

The property was passed down to the newly married George Herbert and Edith Adela Strutt. Their 21-year marriage saw the couple actively involved in their local public life, becoming huge benefactors to the local towns of Belper and Milford. They had five children and were a popular and well-loved family.

1897

Edith sadly passed away and George remarried Mary Emily Charlotte Hind a year later. Makeney Hall underwent extensive renovations. The interior and exterior design reflected the grandeur and elegance of the Victorian era.

1928

Mr Makeney (aka) George Herbert Strutt passed away peacefully at the age of 71. The property remained in the Strutt family and was used by the local community until it was sold to Derbyshire Council in 1936.

1970

Makeney Hall was converted into a hotel receiving extensive refurbishments such as extra rooms, conference facilities and dining areas.

1990s

Sonya Belescolko purchased the property, and it became a popular wedding and event venue known for its picturesque gardens and historic ambience.

2020

Uday Pilani purchases Makeney Hall and begins renovations on the property.

Today

Today, Makeney Hall is owned and operated by the Pilani Family who strives to preserve it’s history, whilst also creating an one-of-a-kind experience for it’s guests.
